In short Philip Macedon infantry was trained to fight both as peltast and as pikemen. Later when Alexander and his succesors waste Macedonian people Macedonians was used mostly as pikemen(due to its importance in pitched battles and rarity) and light infantry role switched to easily accessible local infantry.
